Linocut Printmaking Workshop: The Suicide Method

Explore the reductive (a.k.a. suicide) method of linocut printmaking in a one-day class with printmaker Annette Messitt of the Old Dockton Press. The process involves a number of color overprints made from a single piece of linoleum with more of the linoleum being cut away for each overprinted color. It results in a multicolored print created from a single piece of linoleum.

In this hands-on printmaking class, you will learn how the reductive method of linocut printmaking works. This class is designed for individuals with a basic knowledge of how to use linocut carving tools. If you have taken the Old Dockton Press class “Introduction to Linocut printmaking” you have all the skills you need to participate.

In order to teach all the skills in a single day, students will learn the reductive method using rubber blocks and water-based inks. Students will, by virtue of the process, explore how water-based hues interact with each other as they are layered. Students will also learn how to create a registration jig and use a baren and a hand linopress.

Class Fees

$200 ($150 class fee plus $50 materials fee)

The instructor will supply all needed materials. The fee includes a Speedball carving tool and Ternes Burton registration pins and tabs that students will take home (so they can keep printing!).

Experience Level

Not-quite-a-beginner to Intermediate. You will get the most out of the class if you are already familiar with how to use linocutting tools.

Maximum of eight students (requires a minimum of five people for the class to run)
