About the image:
The Hiyu was built in 1967 to replace an aging wooden ferry on the Point Defiance-Tahlequah ferry route. She held 34 cars and boasted a higher clearance in her two center lanes, allowing trucks to reach Vashon Island without having to drive to the West Seattle terminal.
The lovely Hiyu was in service on that route until the mid-1980s when she was replaced with a larger boat. By the late 1990s, this little ferry was retired from all Washington ferry routes because she was deemed too small. Occasionally, she would save the day by coming back into service when the larger ferry boats broke down.
On July 23, 2015, the Hiyu was put in service for the last time, sailing on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth route as a back-up vessel.
In February 2017, the Hiyu was sold to a private buyer. She’s no longer deemed too “small, slow, and old.” In fact, this cute little gal is living her best life as an entertainment venue on Lake Union.
