About the image:

The Portage salt marsh runs along the isthmus between Vashon and Maury Islands to the north of the Portage Store. The area was once part of a larger salt marsh ecosystem on the island, and it is now one of the last remaining coastal wetlands of its kind in central Puget Sound.

Salt marshes are feeding grounds for juvenile salmon and other species because they store carbon and provide a shallow water refuge for small fish.

As Islanders and visitors ride along Portage in their cars or on their bicycles, they might be distracted by shorebirds diving for prey in the shallows of the habitat. They might crane their necks to spot ducks meandering in the shallows, or spy a cormorant or an osprey.

One must, however, be wary of staring too long lest they find themselves in the company of the numerous Islanders who have missed the turn and landed deep in the marsh. In the event this occurs, hasty removal before anyone recognizes your car is recommended.
